Soil Study: Gelisols, is an illustration of one of the twelve types of soil found on earth. Gelare, 'to freeze' in Latin, refers to this type of soil found in high mountain elevations and polar regions. In the United States, Gelisols are only found in Alaska. They have a layer that remains frozen for years. This watercolor coloration was exacted with tiny brushstrokes to represent a cross-section of this type of soil, cutting into the ground as you would a slice of cake.
